I chose racing flags to honor the memory of my father, stock car champion and local racing legend Pete Corey. More important than all the championships he won and trophies he brought home was the fact that my dad was — and still is — my hero.
For years, my father was a fixture in the competitive stock car racing scene, regularly racing, competing and winning at tracks all across New York Sate, as well as popular local tracks like Lebanon Valley, Fonda, and Albany-Saratoga Speedways.
My father hosted a popular radio show about auto racing –“Stock at Show” — and even had country western singer Grady Watson write and publish a song about him! Ultimately, my dad was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in Weedsport, New York. That was a moment of great pride not only for him but our entire family.
Dad drove #3 “The Crescent Hillbilly,” and his distinctive racing colors were black and gold — the very same colors I am proudly using for my re-election campaign to the New York State Senate’s 43rd District. I think he’d love our new logo!
Every daughter thinks their dad is the strongest, toughest, bravest man in the world. I was different. I didn’t think it; I knew it. My father was fearless, had an iron will and a true champion’s spirit to compete and win, no matter the odds. When he was 30, my father lost the lower portion of his leg in a stock car accident. Within a year, he was back on the track racing and competing, having modified the car to race with just one leg. There just was no quit in my father.
Dad’s life lessons as he “raced to the finish,” was to always work hard, give your best and never quit. They’re lessons I embraced, taught my children, and are now being passed to my grandchildren.
- Never give up.
- Never look back.
- Always do your best.
- Don’t ever let anyone pick on you no matter how big they are.
- Do what’s right.
- Family first.
- Take a risk.
- The only failure is not to try.
- Work hard, be loyal.
- Make a difference.
I proudly carry on my father’s spirit and, most important, the love he gave me and the life lessons he taught me. The racing flags on this website and our campaign signs, literature and decals are dedicated to my dad. I thank you for helping me honor his memory.
I’ll race to the finish dad, just like you taught me.
