Senator Kathy Marchione Honors Six Heroes of the Battle of Iwo Jima During Senate Session

Albany, NY – In advance of Memorial Day, Senator Kathy Marchione (R,C,I,Reform-Halfmoon), Member of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, Senator Jim Tedisco (R,C,I,Ref-Glenville), and Senator Neil Breslin (D,IP,WF-44th Senate District) honored six heroes of the Battle of Iwo Jima during today’s Senate Session.

The six heroes of the Battle of Iwo Jima honored in the Senate today were: Francis “Dick” Varone and Carlo Valenti of Troy; George Ross of Clifton Park; Dr. Tom Smith and Sal Famularo of Glenville; and Thomas Lemme of Albany.

The Iwo Jima Veterans were honored with Senate Resolution, J.2274, sponsored by Senator Marchione, and co-sponsored by Senator Tedisco, and Senator Breslin. All three Senators spoke about the courageous Iwo Jima Veterans, members of the Greatest Generation, from their respective Senate Districts, honored the veterans’ heroism, and saluted their service.

During the Battle of Iwo Jima, which took place from February 19, to March 26, 1945, America’s Armed Forces defeated the Japanese Army during some of the most ferocious fighting of World War II.
